State - Lansing New Cox ad focuses on time as Marine, prosecutor

(AP) -- Republican gubernatorial hopeful Mike Cox focuses on his background in a campaign ad released Monday, highlighting his time as a Marine and prosecutor, and his current job as Michigan's attorney general. The campaign's third TV ad comes shortly after Cox made a jump in polls monitoring the crowded field in the Aug. 3 primary. It is scheduled to air on network and cable stations in markets statewide. Cox's 30-second ad shows photos of him as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, which his campaign says he served in from 1980-83. The ad also mentions his background as a Wayne County assistant prosecutor, a job Cox held before he was elected attorney general in 2002. The commercial bills Cox as a "conservative reformer with a plan." It echoes major Cox campaign themes -- including that he wants to "stop reckless spending" and is against new taxes. The ad says Cox will "clean up" the "mess" left by Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who couldn't seek re-election this year because of term limits. Michigan's unemployment rate had been the highest in the nation for four straight years before edging down to 13.6 percent in May, behind only Nevada. The state has also had state government budget problems for the past several years. Cox is competing with Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, state Sen. Tom George and Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder for the Republican nomination. Cox's first two TV ads criticized Hoekstra, but his latest does not mention any other candidates. An EPIC-MRA poll released late last week says 26 percent of 400 likely Republican voters surveyed by phone from June 12 through June 15 said they'd vote for Cox. Hoekstra had 24 percent, Snyder was at 20 percent and Bouchard was at 16 percent. George was at 2 percent and 12 percent were undecided. The poll conducted for the Detroit Free Press and TV stations WXYZ, WJRT, WOOD and WILX had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
