How the 36th District Court marked Law Day

The 36th District Court of Detroit, Michigan commemorated Law Day by hosting monthlong community outreach, awareness and educational activities. "Obtain Free Legal Advice!" Attorneys from the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, the Hispanic Bar Association, the Legal Aid & Defenders Association, and the Michigan Association for Justice, The United Community Housing Coalition and the Wolverine Bar Association volunteered their time to staff legal information booths at the court answering legal questions in civil, real estate, and traffic matters. The event ran Tuesday, May 4 through Thursday, May 6. More than 100 citizens were able to obtain free legal advice on Civil, Landlord/Tenant and Real Estate matters, as well as advice on self-representation and assistance with completing forms. Notary services were available also. Paralegal students from Lawton School attended the May 6 session to observe the Free Legal Advice clinic as well as observe cases in the courtrooms of Judge Donald Coleman and Judge Leonia Lloyd. House Counsel Attorneys Fred Coleman and Michael Courtney volunteered to assist with the Free Legal Advice clinic. Arabic and Spanish interpreters volunteered to assist non English speaking citizens. Representatives of the Taxpayer's Advocates Office of the Internal Revenue Service provided information about their services. Counselors from Southwest Housing Solutions provided assistance with foreclosure prevention and foreclosure intervention. Career Days, Court Tours and Mock Trials Students from Howard Elementary School of Dearborn, Michigan conducted a mock trial from the script the State v. Jack Robinson, purchased from the American Bar Association. 36th District Court Judges, the Hon. Marylin E. Atkins, Hon. Ruth C. Carter, Hon. Miriam Martin Clark, Hon. Donald Coleman, Hon. Katherine L. Hansen, Hon. Patricia L. Jefferson, Hon. Willie G. Lipscomb, Jr., Hon. Leonia J. Lloyd, Hon. B. Pennie Millender, and the Hon. David S. Robinson, Jr. participated in the Career Days and/or Court Tours component. 36th District Court, Court Reporters and Probation Officers also participated in the career days at the schools. The participating schools were Carleton Elementary School and Fredrick Douglas Academy of Detroit; Howard Elementary School of Dearborn; and Lawton School (College) of Southfield, Michigan. Event Facts: 109 citizens signed in to obtain FREE legal advice 10 36th District Court Judges participated 2 Detroit Public Schools, 1 Dearborn Public School, 1 College Free Legal Advice volunteers received lunch complimentary of the 36th District Court. Members of the bench attended to meet, greet and thank our volunteers. Citizens received A Practical Guide to Hiring a Lawyer, Tenants and Landlords: A Practical Guide and other helpful publications in a Law Day bag Students received Law Day pencils, pencil sharpeners, rulers, bookmarks and "What is the Law for Juveniles?" and other valuable court related information.
