State - Dearborn Testing part of 6-day Mensa convention

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- The upcoming 6-day Mensa convention in suburban Detroit includes testing days for people who want to find out whether they've got what it takes to be a member of the high IQ group. American Mensa and Mensa Canada members meet Wednesday through July 5 at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn. The American Mensa admission test will be given Wednesday and Saturday and the Mensa Canada test day is Friday. More than 2,000 Mensa members and guests are expected for the convention, known as the Annual Gathering. It includes more than 300 programs and speaker sessions. The event marks the 50th anniversary of Mensa in North America. "We are so proud that American Mensa has been able to provide such a strong network of intelligence for 50 years," Maria Sawczuk, 2010 AG Chairman, said in a statement, "and the Annual Gathering is Mensa's way of strengthening that network -- bringing together intelligence from across the globe." Speaker topics range from fashion to astronomy. A book drive is being held to benefit the Detroit Public Library Friends Foundation. There's even a commemorative 50th anniversary postmark for the event that collectors and the public can get on Friday. "Because this is the 50th anniversary of North American Mensa, it is only fitting that Mensa Canada participate in this exciting occasion," Shirley Downes, who is serving as Canadian coordinator for the gathering. The slogan: "Who's the Genius Who Picked Detroit?" has been used to promote the convention. The Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau was behind the slogan, which is part of a series of self-deprecating ads that reference Detroit's image problems. Mensa has more than 57,000 members in the U.S. and more than 110,000 members around the world. Published: Tue, Jun 29, 2010
