SBM to hold its Annual Meeting Sept. 29 - Oct. 1

The State Bar of Michigan will hold its annual meeting and Solo & Small Firm Institute Sept. 29 through Oct. 1 at Devos Place in Grand Rapids. In promoting the meeting and institute, the SBM declares on its website: "There's never been a better time to invest in yourself and your practice--and never a better occasion than your annual meeting! Attend your section meeting, an array of SBM networking events, a huge vendor hall, and the finest Solo & Small Firm Institute yet!" The Solo & Small Firm Institute will involve four simultaneous break out sessions featuring five national speakers. Among the scheduled speakers are: * Jim Calloway of Oklahoma State Bar Association, who serves as the director of the Oklahoma Bar Association Management Assistance Program. He has co-authored or contributed to several ABA books and has had articles published in a wide variety of national, state, and local legal journals. He has been a frequent featured speaker at numerous events and has made hundreds of presentations on law office management, legal technology, ethics, and legal business operations. * Randall F. Dean of Randall Dean Consulting & Training LLC in East Lansing. Dean is a professional speaker, author, and expert on time and e-mail management, effective organization, and the related use of technology. For more than 18 years, he has been leading training and speaking programs and presentations for corporate, academic, and association audiences. His speaking and training programs leave audience members with applicable tools, strategies, and skills on how to better manage their time, technology, e-mail, and office clutter immediately following their program experience. * Barron K. Henley of Henley March & Unger Consulting, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. Henley is an attorney, a "legal technologist" since 1990, and a founding member of Henley March & Unger Consulting, Inc., a firm that handles all aspects of law practice automation. He is a frequent CLE speaker on legal-specific technology issues throughout the United States for bar associations and CLE providers. * Larry Rice of Rice Amundsen & Caperton PLLC out of Memphis, Tenn. Rice is certified as a family law trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and certified as a family law specialist by the Tennessee Board of Specialization. He has lectured at six American Bar Association conventions. He served on the editorial board of the Matrimonial Strategist and has contributed articles on trial tactics, AIDS, and other topics. * Lisa Solomon of Lisa Solomon Esq., Legal Research & Writing, Legal Research & Writing Pro in Ardsley, New York. Solomon was one of the first lawyers to recognize and take advantage of the technological advances that make working with contract (freelance) attorneys practical and profitable for law firms of all sizes. Through Lisa Solomon, Esq. Legal Research and Writing, she assists attorneys with all their legal research and writing needs, including preparing and arguing appeals and drafting substantive motions and trial memoranda. She is the author of many published articles about appellate practice and procedure and has written extensively about the field of contract lawyering. * Janet K. Welch, Executive Director, State Bar of Michigan. Welch is executive director of the State Bar of Michigan. She has had an extensive career in state government, beginning in the Michigan Legislature where she served as a legislative analyst in the House and as the first director of the Senate's nonpartisan legislative analysis office. After graduating from the University of Michigan Law School, Welch was a law clerk for Michigan Supreme Court Justice Robert P. Griffin.
