Basic training session
for conservators
August 4
The Probate Court and Citizens Alliance announce the upcoming training session. On Wednesday, Aug. 4, a basic training for conservators, directed by attorney Michael J. Hughes, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The seminar will be held in courtroom W3, located in the west wing extension of the Oakland County courthouse at 1200 N. Telegraph Road in Pontiac. Criminal Law Update
August 9
The 35th Circuit Court is hosting a Criminal Law Update Aug. 9 featuring Professor Ronald Bretz and criminal defense attorney Matthew Abel. Bretz will provide the same yearly Criminal Law update that he provides to Michigan judges. Abel will discuss the Medical Marihuana Act. The 35th Circuit Court is hosting the event, which is free to Shiawassee County Bar Association Members. The 35th Circuit Court is requesting a $25 donation to the Shiawassee County Bar Association for non-members who wish to attend. The seminar will be hosted at the 35th Circuit Court in Corunna, Mich., from 9 a.m. until noon. WCPBA and MCPBA host
third annual Pryder Cup
August 12
The Wayne County Probate Bar Association and the Macomb County Probate Bar Association will host the third annual Pryder Cup at the Lochmoor Club in Grosse Pointe Woods. The format is based on the Ryder Cup competition with two golfers from Wayne County will compete against two golfers from Macomb County based upon handicaps using a combination of best ball, scramble and every other shot format. The winner of the team 'competition' will be able to designate the charity to whom all profits from the outing will be donated. Participants will be teamed on day of outing. Arrive by 11:30 a.m., if possible. Cost is $100 per person, which includes golf, cart, lunch, non-alcoholic beverages, heavy hors d'oeuvres. The Oakland County Bar Association (OCBA) Juvenile Law Committee will kick-off its Fundamentals of Juvenile Law - Year IV brown bag lunch lecture series with a seminar on "Expungements: General Juvenile, Criminal Sexual Registry and Central Registry" on Thursday, Aug. 12, from noon to 1:15 p.m. at the Oakland County Bar Center in Bloomfield Hills. 'Trial Dos and Don'ts'
Seminar/Golf Outing

The Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) will host "Trial Dos and Don'ts!/Golf Scramble" on Monday, Aug. 23, at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield. A panel of sitting judges will provide attendees with tips on how not to make the same mistake twice. Confirmed speakers include Third Judicial Circuit of Michigan Judge Amy Hathaway; Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Rae Lee Chabot; Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Ed Sosnick; Washtenaw County Circuit Court Judge Don Shelton; additional judges to be announced. MAJ Past President and JPAC Chair Barry Goodman of Goodman Acker will be the moderator for the seminar. The seminar/golf package includes cart rental, putting and driving range, and continental breakfast, boxed lunch, and afterglow party with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. The State Bar Professionalism Program for incoming 1Ls and invited judges and attorneys will take place at the Detroit Athletic Club on August 27 from 3:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. The program matches 50 prominent metro Detroit area lawyers and judges with small groups of new law students to work through a series of ethical and professionalism problems during Orientation. The program will begin with a welcome by Dean Robert M. Ackerman and selected others, proceed with the small group discussion of the ethical problems, and end with a reception.
