36th District Drug Court to honor treatment participants

The 36th District Drug Treatment Court will conduct a graduation ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. in Courtroom 332. The Honorable Leonia J. Lloyd will be presiding. Ten men and women are expected to graduate. The ceremony marks the completion of an intensive 12- to 24-month program of comprehensive drug treatment, close supervision and full accountability. This is the court's 44th graduation ceremony since it was founded in 1998. The 36th District Court hears cases of nonviolent offenders charged with with drug-related crimes. The drug court offloads defendants from the clogged courtrooms of the traditional criminal justice system, placing them in a new type of courtroom environment, where they undergo treatment, counseling, and submit to frequent and random drug testing. Offenders report for weekly or monthly status hearings with Judge Lloyd discuss each person's progress or lack of progress in various court ordered programs and are monitored closely for program compliance. Graduated sanctions, including jail time are imposed for noncompliance. Participants who successfully comply with all conditions and satisfy all drug treatment court requirements may have their cases dismissed or closed. There are now more than 2,400 Drug Courts nationwide. They are located in every U.S. state and thirteen countries. Drug Courts annually serve more than 120,000 people and more than 1 million people have graduated Drug Courts. The 36th District Court Drug Treatment court is a national award winning program. In 2006, the National Association of Drug Court Professionals rated 36th District Drug Treatment Court the "Second Best Drug Treatment Court" in the nation. In 2009 Judge Lloyd was honored with the Champion of Justice Award by the State Bar of Michigan and the Drug Court team was honored with the 2009 "Transformation award from the National Association Of Drug Court Professionals. Judge Lloyd serves on the Board of Directors of the National Drug Court Professionals and chairs the Cultural Proficiency Committee aimed at diversifying programs nationwide.
