Sylvan Township Educators to preserve 110 acres

SYLVAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Two University of Michigan educators have agreed to preserve 110 acres of land they own outside Ann Arbor.

The Legacy Land Conservancy recently announced the agreement with Gerald R. Smith and Catherine Badgley to protect the land in Sylvan Township. It includes grassland and a tamarack swamp.

The conservancy says it's an important piece in the protection of the Huron River watershed.

Badgley is an assistant professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and in the Residential College. Smith is a professor emeritus in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and in Geological Sciences.
