Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton has been honored as "Legislator of the Year" by the Michigan Probate Judges Association," MPJA president Judge Susan L. Dobrich announced recently.
"Rep. Lipton has worked with us to promote legislative changes that will help the mentally ill and children of Michigan," said Dobrich, who serves as chief judge of the Cass County Probate Court. "For example, a bill that she introduced earlier this year, HB 6046, would make it easier for courts to order treatment for mentally ill persons before they harm themselves or others. This is the kind of proactive approach we need."
MPJA members Judge Dorene S. Allen, chief judge of the Midland County Probate Courts, and Judge Milton L. Mack Jr., chief judge of the Wayne County Probate Court, presented the award to Lipton at the MPJA's recent executive board meeting.
Lipton is serving her first term as State Representative for the 27th House District, which includes Berkley, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods and part of Oak Park in Oakland County. She is vice-chair of the House Judiciary Committee and also serves on the House's Energy & Technology, Tax Policy, and Insurance committees.
A patent attorney and Harvard Law graduate, Lipton also holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Williams College. She has served as the public representative on the State Board of Accountancy, a position she was appointed to by Governor Granholm.
