Rochester Hills: Belgian who married Mich. convict seeks Green Card
ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- A Belgian woman who married a man serving a life sentence for murder in a Lapeer prison is seeking permanent residency in the U.S.
Even if 35-year-old Isabelle Hayward successfully earns a Green Card, she'll still have to wait to spend more time with her husband.
Clay Hayward is being held at the Thumb Correctional Facility and won't be eligible for parole until 2014.
Prison records show the 38-year-old Saginaw man was convicted in 1993 of second-degree murder and weapons offenses.
The couple married in 2009 after being pen pals for several years.
Isabelle Hayward lives in Rochester Hills.
Her lawyer, Gabriel Triculescu, tells The Oakland Press of Pontiac that convincing immigration officials that their marriage is legitimate has not been easy over the past year.
Brighton: Mich. man faces up to life in prison after threat
BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) -- A Brighton man who pleaded guilty to threatening to shoot people while waiting to get inside a secretary of state office in Livingston County faces up to life in prison as a habitual offender.
The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus says Chase Raymond Jabs told Circuit Judge David Reader that on Aug. 2 he tried to get to the front of a line, got into a verbal altercation with a man and told his brother that he "should get a gun and start shooting."
Jabs did not have a weapon. He told officers it "was just a joke."
Jabs was convicted in 2005 for attempted larceny from a person and attempted delivery or manufacture of a controlled substance. He also has a 2006 conviction in Florida for felony battery.
Ann Arbor: NIH grants UM med school $369M in fiscal 2010
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- The University of Michigan says doctors and scientists at its medical school received $369 million in National Institutes of Health research funding in the 2010 federal fiscal year.
The Ann Arbor school says medical faculty members got $482 million in research funding from all sources in the university's 2010 fiscal year.
Michigan says in federal fiscal 2010, s medical school ranked ninth in the nation in National Institutes of Health grants and fourth among medical schools affiliated with public universities.
Medical School Dean James O. Woolliscroft says the high level of federal research funding should help contribute to the state's economic growth.
