Inaugural 'Drink 'n' Learn' tonight

What would you rather have at 5:30 pm today, a draft beer or a draft brief?
At the risk of creating a flash mob, the DMBA kicks off a new no/low cost series of programs tonight with its inaugural "Drink 'n' Learn". We are designing this series as a fun, easy way to provide networking and a little professional development. Tonight's event is at Foran's, 612 Woodward, 5:30 p.m, light appetizers provided, happy hour prices. Free to DMBA members, $5 for nonmembers.
This first "Drink 'n' Learn" features U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Murphy III. Judge Murphy will share a few observations and stories from the bench, as a former U.S. Attorney, a Department of Justice litigator and member of the G.M. legal staff. We're also expecting questions, comments and plenty of socializing amongst all of us.
We can't promise you will grace the pages of Motion Magazine. But we can take your picture, offer a snack and introduce you to some of Detroit's well known and not yet known legal talent. You could grace a page or cover of the Detroit Lawyer, learn something new, or catch up with a judge or two. Come see some friends, share advice or just unwind before you go home. Save Thursdays April 21 and May 19 for our second and third "Drink 'n' Learns."
The Barristers continue their "Bar Review" first Tuesday networking series at the Town Pump on March 1 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. No registration is required, drop by when you can. They even welcome us seasoned types.
"Celebrating Our Diverse Bar" is March 3 at Fishbones, 5:00 - 7:30 pm. The Federal Bar, Detroit Metropolitan Bar, Hispanic Bar, Wolverine Bar, Women Lawyers -Wayne Region, Armenian-American Bar, D. Augustus Straker Bar, Black Women Lawyers and many other associations are getting together again in a purely social setting. Tickets are $10. With over 100 attendees last year, we expect a great turnout again.
If a little more action is your style, check out an amazing and inexpensive "Barristers Night with the Detroit Derby Girls" on March 19. Michelle T. Thomas, a lawyer at Bodman and DMBA Barristers Director, is a member of the Devil's Night Dames, where she is known as Swift Justice. Help the Barristers cheer on "Swifty" as the Devil's Night Dames take on the Detroit Pistoffs at Cobo Arena. $12 for adults, free for children 12 and under.
Speaking of justice, some fun after hours c.l.e. occurs on Tuesday, March 22nd. Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Elizabeth "Lisa" Gleicher and her husband appellate lawyer Mark Granzatto will debate appellate advocacy. These two specialists will share their (often differing) views on what to do and not to do on appeal. Think Tracy and Hepburn, Carville and Matalin. Of course, there will be food and lots of socializing. This "Debate" is co-sponsored by the State Bar's Appellate Practice Section.
As we at the DMBA launch these new programs and plan our annual events, we want to reach and support all of our members with fun, relevant, valuable, affordable activities. You are practitioners at all size firms, solos, students, new graduates, in-house and in government, employed, unemployed and underemployed. Some have several decades of experience, some have little or none.
Wherever you are in your career, come out and experience the DMBA as your bar association for networking, professional development and community service. We are designing it for you.
