Detroit nonprofit honors Foley & Lardner partner

Think Detroit PAL's second-annual MVP event, sponsored by the DTE Energy Foundation, was a night to remember. The sold-out award ceremony on February 17, which included Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and WJR's Paul W. Smith, netted the nonprofit $63,000. According to Think Detroit PAL Chief Executive Officer Michael Porter, the purpose of Thursday night's event was to honor "...some of Think Detroit PAL's pre-eminent, long time supporters. Without their involvement, Think Detroit PAL might not even exist, and it certainly would not have had the same level of success at using team sports to build the character of girls and boys in Detroit." Scott Seabolt of Northville, a partner with Foley & Lardner LLP law firm, was honored with the John D. Scodellaro Builder Award, for the dedication he has shown to Think Detroit PAL in serving as the nonprofit's interim CEO in 2010. "For most of the year, Scott did double duty--managing his law practice while also serving as interim CEO of Think Detroit PAL," Porter explained. "And by all accounts--he handled both magnificently. Thanks to his leadership and the efforts of Tim Richey, who was then the interim COO, Think Detroit PAL operated smoothly despite the travails of the local economy." Seabolt's appointment was only supposed to last for a few months, until a new CEO could be found. But 'the best laid plans of mice and men often go askew,' and a few months blossomed into nine. "My time as interim CEO was one of the most enriching parts of my career," Seabolt said after accepting his award. "At then end of the day, 2010 was a great year, and I got more out of my experiences with Think Detroit PAL than I will ever be able to give back." The John D. Scodellaro Builder Award is presented to an individual or organization that has provided long-term service to Think Detroit PAL in an effort to sustain its greatness and help to bring it to the next level. John D. Scodellaro has served on Think Detroit PAL's board for more than twenty years and played a key role in the merger of Think Detroit Inc. and Detroit's Police Athletic League, offering vision and insight during a time of upheaval. Other awards and honorees included: Coach William "Pip" Dooley, awarded with the Varner/Tenbusch Game Changer Award; Detroit Lions' Tim Pendell, awarded with the John D. Scodellaro Builder Award; Paul W. Smith, awarded with the Dave Bing MVP Leadership Award; and W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Daniel Varner, awarded with the Dave Bing MVP Leadership Award.
