FBA to hold bench-bar conference

The Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter is sponsoring a bench-bar conference on April 28 at The Henry Hotel in Dearborn. The theme is "Media and the Law" and will feature panel discussions from illustrious members of the bench, bar, and media. Magistrate Judge Mona K. Majzoub will host the program, which will begin at 11:30 a.m with a reception and a lunch. The luncheon speaker is Chris Hansen, NBC correspondent and host of "To Catch a Predator" -- and former WDIVTV reporter. The first panel, titled "Navigating a High Profile Case," will be moderated by Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen. Several attorneys who have represented high-profile clients will share their experiences and lessons learned and offer insights about handling such cases, including Charles Babcock (counsel for Oprah Winfrey), Anthony Chambers (counsel for Umar Farock Abdulmuttallab), William Jeffress (counsel for Scooter Libby), Robert Morvillo (counsel for Martha Stewart), and Ira Sorkin (counsel for Bernie Madoff ). District Judge Nancy G. Edmunds will complete the panel, providing a judicial perspective on managing such cases. The second panel discussion is titled "Expectations: Can't Live With Them, Can't Live Without Them." It will be moderated by Rod Hansen, long time radio personality and current media liaison for the Eastern District of Michigan. The panel, comprising journalists, lawyers and judges, will provide a wide-array of viewpoints and perspectives on numerous issues pertaining to the relationship between the bench, bar and media -- including, post-trial access to jurors, impact of social media, and reasons for talking or not talking to the media. The panelists include: David Ashenfelter (Detroit Free Press), Thomas Cranmer (Miller Canfield/WXYZ-TV), Kevin Dietz (WDIV-TV), Marie Osborne (WWJ Radio), and Bankole Thompson (Michigan Chronicle), David DuMouchel (Butzel Long), Richard Helfrick (Federal Defender Office), Judge David M. Lawson (E.D. Mich.), Barbara McQuade (U.S. Attorney), and Judge Richard Suhrheinrich (6th Circuit). The event will be followed by a cocktail reception, a chance to share a drink and hors d'oeuvres with colleagues and the panelists. Registration is available on online at www.fbamich.org or by mail.
