Snyder to address FBA at Gilman lunch

The Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is pleased to announce that Michigan Governor Rick Snyder will be the featured speaker at its annual Leonard R. Gilman Award Luncheon on Thursday, April 21, at 11:30 a.m. at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel in Detroit. Snyder, the 48th governor of the State of Michigan, has strong Michigan roots. He was born in Battle Creek, married in Dearborn, and earned three degrees from the University of Michigan: a Bachelor of General Studies, an MBA from the University of Michigan Business School and a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. "We are thrilled that Governor Snyder will be taking time from his busy schedule to speak to our chapter," said U.S. District Court Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen, Eastern District of Michigan. "Len Gilman believed that doing the right thing was the most important work of practitioners in criminal law, and Governor Snyder certainly shares that important value." Snyder will speak at a luncheon at which the Gilman Award, presented to an outstanding practitioner in criminal law, will be conferred upon Wayne F. Pratt, Chief of the Health Care Fraud Unit of the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Michigan. Under Pratt's leadership, this unit investigates and prosecutes cases ranging from fraudulent billing practices in Medicare, Medicaid and private health insurance programs to wrongful diversion of prescription drugs to individuals without prescriptions. Pratt's team, a multi-discipline group of Criminal and Civil attorneys, is known and respected for relentlessly attacking fraud in the health care sector with every enforcement tool available. "The Gilman Award honors the memory of Leonard Gilman who served as United States attorney in this district from 1981 until his death in 1985. Len is remembered as a man who spent his entire professional life in public service as a prosecutor yet never forgot that every case involved unique human beings and that compassion was not weakness. Wayne Pratt is a man who has been a large part of the living legacy of Len Gilman. He has always strived to do the right thing in the right way and, in doing so, has earned the respect of his colleagues in the U.S. attorney's office and the members of the defense bar," added Michael Leibson, an assistant U.S. attorney and chair of the Gilman Selection Committee.
