Ann Arbor City gives OK to medical marijuana ordinance ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- The Ann Arbor City Council has given the OK to an ordinance that calls for increased regulation of the cultivation and distribution of medical marijuana in the city. The Michigan Daily reports that City Council voted unanimously Monday night in favor of the measure following months of deliberation. Following the vote, council members discussed further possible amendments to the ordinance including clarifying licensing limits for dispensaries and cultivation facilities. Michigan voters agreed in 2008 to legalize marijuana for the treatment of some health problems. Other communities have passed local rules. Grand Haven 2 men get up to 20 years in videotaped sex attack GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (AP) -- Two young men were sentenced Monday to up to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl while one man's father videotaped the attack. An Ottawa County Circuit Court jury in Grand Haven convicted the men March 11 of first-degree criminal sexual conduct for the June 28, 2010, attack. On Monday, Judge Ed Post sentenced Jordan Paris, 19, to nine to 20 years in prison and Sage Lewis, 20, to 10? to 20 years. Lewis got a longer minimum because of his juvenile criminal record. Authorities say the three men assaulted the girl after she passed out in a hot-tub shed on land owned by Paris' father. Kelly Paris, 44, was sentenced in January and is serving 12 to 20 years for the sexual assault and for videotaping it. Before the sentencing, the victim told the court she hoped neither man could ever victimize anyone else. "What they thought was a night of fun was the worst night of my life," she said. "Today, I'm not as quick to trust people. And over the past year, I've had a rollercoaster of emotions." "Not only was my last year of childhood stolen from me, but I also have to deal with these feelings for the rest of my life," she said. Lewis and Paris didn't speak at the sentencing. Their lawyer said his clients were treated more harshly than they deserved, The Grand Rapids Press reported. "I just think that anyone who sat through the trial recognizes it wasn't predatory conduct," Terry Nolan said. Warren Homeowner fatally shoots armed teen burglar WARREN, Mich. (AP) -- Police in the Detroit suburb of Warren say a homeowner fatally shot a knife-wielding teenage boy who broke into his home. Police Lt. Michael Torey say the boy entered the home about 10 a.m. Monday. Torey tells The Detroit News that the commotion woke the homeowner, who grabbed a shotgun and confronted the knife-holding teen. Torey says the homeowner fired one shot, which struck the teen in the leg. The lieutenant says the youth jumped out the window and collapsed in the back yard. Torey says the teen died at a hospital. WDIV-TV reports the homeowner is 31 and the teen was 17. It says medical marijuana was being grown at the home. The lieutenant says so far, it appears the shooting was justifiable. The teen's name was immediately released. Grand Rapids Elderly man loses trial against cops GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- A jury has cleared Grand Rapids police of using excessive force against a man in his 80s who had a nasty black eye after a confrontation with officers. Jurors in federal court on Monday unanimously found that Gerald Haveman's constitutional rights were not violated in 2008. Police say Haveman's injuries were due to his own resistance when officers were investigating his son in a domestic violence case. Haveman was 85 years old at the time and now is 88. He sustained a black eye, a bloody nose and rib injuries. Grand Rapids city attorney Margaret Bloemers tells The Grand Rapids Press that the police department fully supports the officer, Mark Konynenbelt. Warren Minn. man accused of killing stepdaughter in Mich. WARREN, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities say a Minnesota man killed his 20-year-old stepdaughter in Michigan because she left home and wasn't following Islam. Forty-five-year-old Rahim Alfetlawi was being held Tuesday in the Macomb County Jail without bond after being charged with first-degree murder in the death Saturday of Jessica Mokdad at her grandmother's home in the Detroit suburb of Warren. He was arraigned Monday and awaits a May 12 preliminary examination. Warren Police Detective Lt. Michael Torey says the Coon Rapids man went to police in neighboring Center Line to report the shooting. Torey says Alfetlawi told police the gun accidentally discharged when he pulled it out but police believe he intentionally shot her in the head. Alfetlawi requested a court-appointed lawyer.
