Miller Canfield
The law firm of MILLER CANFIELD is pleased to announce that ROBIN W. ASHER, DAVID J. FORD, and MARK L. MAKI have joined the firm in the Intellectual Property (IP) Group, further expanding the firm's IP practice, which handles patent, trademark, copyright, technology transfer and trade secret counseling and litigation.
Miller Canfield's Intellectual Property Group includes 25+ lawyers in Michigan, Illinois, Canada, Mexico, Poland and China offering legal expertise in patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and computer transactions, including comprehensive dispute resolution. Lawyers provide guidance and counsel in all phases of domestic and foreign patent procurement, licensing, and litigation, and assist in formulating IP strategies to protect innovation evolving from their research and development.
Asher joins Miller Canfield as a principal in the Detroit office. His IP experience includes administration, management and prosecution of patent portfolios for several Fortune 500 companies, including automotive manufacturers and suppliers. He is also experienced in preparation and analysis of patentability, validity and infringement searches and opinions; preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications; negotiation of license agreements and technology assignments; and litigation counseling.
He is admitted to practice before the European Patent Office and Board of Patent Appeals, as well as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. He earned his law degree from Detroit College of Law and his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University.
Ford joins as an associate in the Detroit office. He brings his automotive industry work experience and a range of IP experience including prosecution of domestic and foreign patents and trademarks; patentability, validity and infringement opinions; trademark oppositions; technology transfers; copyrights; and domain name disputes. His IP experience also includes management and prosecution of a global trademark portfolio.
He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He earned his law degree from Michigan State College of Law and his B.A.S.C. in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo. He has worked as an engineer for Ford Motor Company and Nemak of Canada.
Maki joins Miller Canfield as a principal in the Kalamazoo office. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He earned his law degree from John Marshall Law School and his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University.

McNeill also advises clients on corporate governance and regulatory matters.
In her most recent position with the Department of the Treasury in Washington, D.C., McNeill was the lead attorney handling the $80 billion investment in the automotive industry for the Automotive Investment Financing Program within the Troubled Asset Relief Program. She has also served as an in-house counsel for American Capital Strategies, Ltd.; as an associate with Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP and Morrison & Foerster LLP; and as an analyst and a manager in the U.S. Air Force.
She earned her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School and a B.S. in Operations Research from the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Butzel Long
BUTZEL LONG attorney and shareholder ROBIN LUCE HERRMANN was a featured speaker during the Michigan Council of School Attorneys Annual Spring Law Conference on May 11 in Lansing. The Conference is sponsored by the Michigan Association of School Boards.
Herrmann, who also is general counsel of the Michigan Press Association, will discuss the Open Meetings Act and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) during the event.
Herrmann concentrates her practice in the areas of media law, particularly defamation and access issues; commercial litigation, including RICO; non-competes and trade secrets; and civil rights. She has extensive trial and appellate experience in both state and federal courts in a variety of areas.
In addition, Herrmann previously taught Law of the Press in the Journalism Department at Oakland University. She also has been a guest speaker on Law of the Press at Wayne State University, Central Michigan University, and Oakland University. She is the author of numerous articles as well.
Herrmann is a member of the American Bar Association including the ABA Communications Law Forum; Woman Advocate Committee of the Litigation Section; a past member and vice-chair of the ABA Law and Media Committee; and active in the Media Law Resource Center.
Herrmann has been very active with Community Legal Resources over the years. Currently, she is chair for the Board of Directors. She also served as vice-chair Board of Directors - 2006 to 2009; chair, Finance Committee - 2003 to 2006; and she has been a board member since 2003.
Herrmann is a 1984 graduate of the University of Michigan and a 1993 graduate of the Detroit College of Law.
Additionally, Butzel Long attorney KATHERINE (KATIE) DONOHUE GOUDIE will be a featured panelist during an American Bar Association Section of Litigation webinar on Tuesday, May 17.
The webinar is titled, "Key Issues Confronting Practitioners in Trade Secret Litigation." The webinar will focus on how employee movement is triggering a wave in trade secret litigation. The panel will address three areas of importance: forensic review issues relating to departing employees, pre-employment issues and damages in trade secret cases.
Based in Butzel Long's Detroit office, Goudie concentrates her practice on employment, non-compete and trade secret litigation, traditional labor law, higher education law, and employment-related and e-discovery counseling.
She is admitted to practice in the State of Michigan, the United States Court of Appeals in the Sixth Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan.
Goudie is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association - director on the Board of Barristers, Membership chair and Law Day chair; American Bar Association - Employment Rights and Responsibilities Section member and Non-Compete/Trade Secret and Technology Subcommittee member.
She has written numerous articles and is a frequent speaker on trade secret litigation.
Goudie is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (2003). She received the State Bar of Michigan Negligence Law Section Award for trial advocacy, the Frank Sengstock Award for Excellence in Legal Writing, and the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation Award for Outstanding Women Law Students. Goudie also is a graduate of the University of Michigan (2000).

TIMOTHY J. CURRIER, CEO of BEIER HOWLETT PC in Bloomfield Hills announced that the firm has been selected as legal counsel for the City of Orchard Lake Village and the Wayne County Metropolitan Airport Authority Ethics Board.
