Swing to cure-- Attorney driven event raises funds for diabetes research

With a championship pedigree from the University of Michigan football team, attorney Rich Hewlett is no stranger to success -- even on the golf course. Evidence of that fact appeared May 16 at the Swing to Cure Diabetes golf event hosted by Hewlett and his wife, Chris, at the U-M Golf Course. The outing, which drew more than 120 golfers to the championship layout within the shadows of Michigan Stadium, raised more than $45,000 for Type 1 diabetes research, according to the Hewletts, whose son Jeffery was diagnosed with the disease 12 years ago. Over the course of three years, the outing has raised more than $155,000 to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the University of Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center. Brady Hoke, new head coach for the Wolverines, presented opening remarks at the event, which also featured appearances by former U-M coach Gary Moeller, former offensive line coach Jerry Hanlon, sportscaster Jim Brandstatter and his wife Robbie Timmons, and Cathy Schembechler. "Chris and I are blessed to have so many good and long-time friends volunteer, sponsor, or take part in the event," said Hewlett, an attorney with Varnum and a member of two Rose Bowl teams at Michigan in the early '80s. "Most of them have participated in the event all three years and we cannot thank them enough for their loyal and generous support. This is not only a great cause, but, for us personally, it is also a very gratifying testament to long-time friendships." Jim Slaughter, executive director for JDRF, also attended the event, as did Dr. Peter Arvan, chair of the U-M Comprehensive Diabetes Center. Varnum, which has offices in five Michigan cities, was the lead sponsor of this year's event. Hewlett specializes in business and construction litigation, as well as contract law for Varnum.
