MJA to lead delegation to The Hague

The Michigan Judges Association will lead a delegation of Michigan judges to The Hague, Netherlands, in July 2011 to view and experience firsthand the principles of international justice and the functions of the international courts. MJA has arranged with judges from various international courts for privately guided tours, meetings and briefings from members of the courts in The Hague. The international courts include the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Court (ICC), the International Court Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL), Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) and the Vredespaleis (Peace Palace), MJA board member and MJA Past President, Judge William J. Caprathe from Bay County Circuit Court believes that a foundation in international law has become increasingly more relevant in today's contemporary judiciary In the present era of globalization. "It is important to expand our horizons of knowledge about administering the law," Caprathe says. "This is an excellent opportunity to experience the procedures and techniques used by the international court systems. The exchange of information will make both the European courts and our courts more effective and efficient." A reception with U.S. Ambassador, Honorable Fay Hartog Levin and a meeting with ICJ American Justice, Honorable Joan Donoghue at the Peace Palace in the Great Hall of Justice are also planned. The Peace Palace houses the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Hague Academy of International Law, and the extensive Peace Palace Library. The trip is the culmination of hard work and dedication on behalf of MJA, Judge Caprathe, MJA President Judge Annette J.
